Isan, Thailand’s vast Northeast, is more than a region. It’s a living story of survival, spirit, and celebration. At Kats Cuisine in St Albans, we’re proud to share the culture that shaped us. Let’s journey through Isan’s remarkable past.
Where Is Isan, And Why It’s Unique
Covering 20 provinces and one-third of Thailand, Isan sits on a high, dry plateau between the Mekong River and Cambodia. Red soil, endless rice fields, and extreme seasons forged a people known for resilience, humor, and community.
Ancient Beginnings: The Khmer Empire’s Legacy
From the 9th to 13th centuries, the Khmer Empire ruled Isan. Grand stone temples like Phanom Rung and Prasat Hin Phimai still stand. These are masterpieces of architecture and astronomy. They remind us: Isan was once a center of power and faith.
Lao Migration & Cultural Fusion
Over centuries, Lao people crossed the Mekong. They brought language, music, and traditions. Today, Isan dialect is closer to Lao than central Thai. You’ll hear it in Mor Lam, Isan’s soulful folk music played on the khaen, a bamboo mouth organ, still performed at festivals across the region.
Celebration & Community: The Heart of Isan Life
Despite hardship, Isan people celebrate with joy.
Bun Bang Fai (Rocket Festival): Handmade bamboo rockets launched to call the rain, followed by music and dance
Phi Ta Khon (Ghost Festival): Colorful masks, parades, and storytelling in Loei
Silk Weaving: Intricate Mudmee patterns passed down through generations
These traditions teach us one thing: Isan turns challenge into celebration.
Isan Spirit in St Albans
I was born in Maha Sarakham. I grew up with Mor Lam songs, Rocket Festival drums, and my grandmother’s stories. That same warmth, pride, and community now lives in everything we do at Kats Cuisine. We’re not just a takeaway. We’re a piece of Isan in Hertfordshire.
